Dan Wheldon died Sunday after a fiery 15-car wreck at the Las Vegas Indy 300.
The 33-year-old racer drove the race car sponsored by Justin Timberlake‘s William Rast clothing line. He won the Indy 500 in 2005 and again in May.
“IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries,” IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said in a statement, excerpted by USA Today. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race. In honor of Dan Wheldon, the drivers have decided to do a five-lap salute to in his honor.”
Earlier in the day, Wheldon tweeted excitedly: “Big day today. $5,000,000 at stake! Heading to the track.”
He is survived by his wife Susie and their sons Sebastian, 2 and Oliver, 7 months.
